Biographical Text

Zeev (Vilém) Scheck, Zionist, diplomat. In 1943 he was deported to the Terezín (Theresienstadt) Ghetto, where he became a member of the Hechalutz leadership. In October 1944 he was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, later to Dessau-Kaufering. After his return to Prague he became one of the initiators of the the Dokumentační akce (Documentation Project). In 1946 he emigrated to Palestine. He worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the diplomatic service. In 1967 Sheck served as the Israeli Ambassador in Vienna. In 1977 he was sent to serve as Israeli Ambassador in Rome, where he died in 1978.
