Milá Milinko,

Tak se mi to dnes konečně podařilo dostat se s oddílem pracovníků na nádraží. Skládáme z vagónů brambory na auta, dělá se opatrně a pomalu. Pokoušel jsem se již několikráte dát Tobě nějakou zprávu, nepodařilo se mi to. Z našich kasáren je psát pod trestem smrti zakázáno, později to snad bude dovoleno. Mám se celkem dobře, na práci chodí většinou jen mladší lidi, z dlouhé chvíle se však hlásím dobrovolně.
Dopisy a balíky sem jdou a správně je každý dostane, ovšem censurované. Napiš mně Miluško třeba jen lístek ihned, bych věděl, že tento dopis jsi dostala. Jen jedno Tě upozorňuji, nesmíš se v tom psaní ani slůvkem zmínit, že já jsem Ti psal. Napiš asi takto:
Náhodou jsem se od známých dopátrala, že jsi v Terezíně, atd.
Nepiš nic o válce nebo něco politického, jen soukromé věci a stručně. Dostala jsi penzi?
Buď tak hodná, na Vánoce mi pošli vánočku, balíček ve váze asi 2-3 kg, konservy a podobné věci do balíku nedávej, to seberou. Chleba ještě mám, dostáváme denně 25 dkg, je to málo, ale mně to stačí. Nediv se, že tak škrábu, píšu to v nákladním vagóně. Hlavně ještě jednou, ani slovo nebo nějakou zmínkou o tom, že já jsem psal.
Miluško, tomu, kdo Ti ten dopis doručí, dej 50 K (padesát korun), budu hledět zase brzy Ti napsat.
O válce se zde taky tu a tam něco dozvíme.

Dear Milinka,

So I finally managed to get to the train station with the workers’ group. We’re unloading potatoes from railway cars and loading them onto cars carefully and slowly. I tried several times to pass on a message to you, but I wasn’t able to. In our barracks, writing is forbidden and punishable by death. Hopefully, they will allow it later. I’m doing fairly well. Mostly young people work, but I volunteer whenever I feel bored.
Letters and packages do get to us and are distributed to the right people, but they are censored. Miluška, write me a note as soon as you can so that I can know that you’ve received this letter. But I must warn you about one thing: you mustn’t mention that I’ve written to you in your letter. Write something like this:
My friends told me in passing that you are in Theresienstadt, etc.
Don’t write anything about the war, don’t mention anything political, stick to private things and keep it short. Did you receive your pension?
Could I ask you please to send me Christmas bread for Christmas? Put it in a package that weighs about 2-3 kg. Don’t pack cans or other such things into it, they’ll seize those. I still have some bread. We receive 25 dkg per day. It’s not much, but it’s enough for me. Don’t be alarmed by my bad handwriting, I’m writing this inside a freight train. Once more, I must insist: not a single word about my letter.
Miluška, give 50 K (fifty crowns) to the person who will deliver the letter to you. I will find another way to write to you soon.
News about the war reaches us here sometimes.
